Cassiya

Cassiya grew from musical relationships in Cassis, Port Louis, into a group whose songs travelled across the Indian Ocean and beyond. Désiré François’s voice is closely associated with that history, alongside the writers, arrangers and instrumentalists who shaped the recordings. Séparation, released in 1993, remains a documented starting point in the group’s catalogue.

A group built through collaboration

The artist press account places the making of Séparation within a collaboration that included Gérard Louis and Alain Ramanisum. It describes the adoption of the Cassiya name at this stage and the development of a more professional group. The songs did not emerge from a singer working alone: arrangements, instrumental playing and the relationships among members shaped what listeners came to recognize as Cassiya.

The same account records a 1993 performance in Rodrigues followed by a visit to Réunion in 1994. This regional circulation preceded wider touring. Cassiya’s audience grew through neighbouring islands as well as through the later stages associated with its international reputation.

A repertoire returned to in later releases

The Piros catalogue identifies Séparation under the fuller title Séparation (Zenfants perdi simé), with 1993 as its release year. Later artist material for Nou Zistwar / Back in the Days brings titles such as Rev nou ancetre, Narye pa efface and Ici kot nu ete into another release context.

Those later presentations show a repertoire being revisited rather than a list of unrelated hits. The recording edition, group credit and participating musicians remain important when following songs across compilations and newer projects.
