Decide what you want to do with it
Say whether you want a playable instrument, a gift, a decorative piece or equipment for regular study. For a playable instrument, ask a teacher which dimensions and construction are suitable before buying. A miniature souvenir and a working ravanne are different purchases.
If you are commissioning an instrument, agree the specification, finished price, deposit conditions, completion date and collection method in writing with the maker.
Questions worth asking the seller
Ask who made the instrument and where, what the frame and membrane are made from, whether you can hear the exact item, and how it should be stored. Check whether a case, beater or other accessories are included.
Request a receipt and a clear explanation of repairs or returns. For a custom build, ask what happens if your departure date arrives before the instrument is ready. Avoid transferring money on the strength of an unverified social-media account.
Plan transport before paying
Measure the packed instrument and check the airline’s baggage rules. If the instrument contains animal skin, untreated plant material or seeds, ask the destination’s official border authority what documentation may be required. Rules depend on material and destination; the guide does not grant import clearance.
Do not rely on a generic statement that all musical instruments are permitted. Keep the maker’s material description and receipt with your travel documents.
Use the maker and retailer research leads
The directory records the source that supports each entry and what still needs confirmation. Contact the maker or retailer through its own published channel. We do not claim a commercial relationship, guaranteed stock or a lowest price.
A workshop visit is not automatically a public attraction. Arrange it in advance, pay for teaching or demonstrations where requested, and ask before photographing tools, work in progress or people.
Common questions
How much does a ravanne cost?
Prices depend on the maker, dimensions, materials and accessories. This guide does not publish an unverified price range; ask for a current quote for the exact instrument.
Can I take a ravanne home on a flight?
Check packed dimensions with the airline and material rules with your destination’s border authority before purchase.
