Kaya

Kaya, Joseph Réginald Topize, is central to the history of seggae, the Mauritian meeting of sega and reggae. With Racinetatane, he made recordings that brought Creole expression and Rastafari consciousness into a distinctive musical form. His catalogue spans early cassettes, later studio releases and posthumous editions that continue to introduce the music to new listeners.

KAYA ek Racinetatane - SPIRIT SEGGAE MUSIK (Official Audio)

KAYA

Spirit Seggae Musik offers a second Kaya and Racinetatane recording from the Seggae Man reissue. Hearing both tracks gives a fuller introduction to the group’s recorded seggae repertoire.

The early Racinetatane cassette period

The official archive dates Seggae Nu Lamizik to 1989–1990 and credits Percy Yip Tong as producer at Cyper Produktion. It presents the release as part of the earliest documented Racinetatane and Kaya recording period. That date range is retained because the archive itself has not reduced it to a single confirmed release day.

The catalogue distinguishes this cassette from Roots of Seggae, issued in 1998 using earlier recordings. A later issue can preserve music from an earlier stage in an artist’s development; the year printed beside a streaming release does not necessarily identify when its performances were recorded.

A catalogue with several stages

The archive’s chronology places La Paix, Problem Société and Racine Pé Brilé within the early 1990s, followed by Seggae Man and later solo work associated with Zistwar Revoltan. It also documents the collaboration Tansyon Mové Zyntansyon with The Freeman. Kaya’s history is therefore a sequence of projects and collaborators, not one isolated landmark album.

His death in police custody in February 1999 ended that performing career. Subsequent tributes, compilations and restored releases form a different chapter, through which older recordings remain part of present musical memory.
