Serge Lebrasse

Serge Lebrasse helped bring sega to records, radio and stages beyond its earlier community settings. Known for Madame Eugène and a long performance career, he also worked as a schoolteacher. His recollections reveal both the pleasure of making music and the social prejudice faced by a teacher who chose to sing in Creole.

SERGE LEBRASSE...mme eugene

An independently uploaded recording identified as Serge Lebrasse singing Madame Eugène. It offers a direct introduction to the song most closely associated with his early recording career.

A teacher who became a recording artist

In a 2016 interview, Lebrasse recalled teaching in several schools while his desire to sing grew stronger. He connected the composition of Madame Eugène with a vivid period of family life, including the baptism of his eldest daughter. Radio exposure did not end the criticism: he remembered a parent objecting to a sega singer teaching a child. His account shows the social distance the music had to travel before its later public celebration.

The Kanasucs and the hotel circuit

Lebrasse traced his early musical experience through a choir and an orchestra that changed names several times before becoming the Kanasucs. He described working in hotels, including a five-year period at Morne Brabant. This was a sustained professional setting for musicians, not simply an occasional performance added to a holiday.

His documented repertoire also includes Sega le Ier Janvier, Maurice mo pays and Marchand Pistasse. The songs belong to different moments in a recording career that connected everyday stories with audiences at home and abroad. Lebrasse’s work helps explain how sega acquired a public life through teaching, broadcasting, records and regular paid performance.
