Mo Mari Fini Allé
Release - TopicMo Mari Fini Allé appears in the Soul Sok Séga reissue and is credited to Catherine Velienne. The catalogue identifies Disques Capricorne as the original recording label and Eric Nelson as writer.
Catherine Velienne is a songwriter and singer whose sega has drawn on women’s work, relationships and the demand for equality. Her early singles connect her with Mauritian recording networks of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Later self-produced work continued that attention to everyday experience, giving her repertoire a strongly personal perspective.

Mari Catalogue is an independently uploaded recording attributed to Catherine Velienne. It offers a different part of her repertoire alongside the older recording preserved in Soul Sok Séga.
In her interview with Pan African Music, Velienne recalls first performing with a schoolfriend on ravanne, using a truck as their stage. Her 1969 single paired Séga fraternelle with Marsan sorbet, arranged by Claudio Veeraragoo. A later release with the Flibustiers included Joli garçon. The Phonothèque catalogue preserves these repertoire and ensemble connections.
She explains that her recorded name resulted from a spelling error which she retained as an artist name. That small detail illustrates why archive credits and the artist’s own account are useful companions when following a career across older records.
Velienne describes work as a washerwoman and seamstress, experiences reflected in songs about women’s labour. After a long period away from recording, she returned with a cassette in 1992 and continued writing and producing work herself. She recalls paying for sessions and selling records directly.
Her later repertoire addresses domestic violence, equality and women’s place in society. These concerns give the music substance beyond its dance setting. Her songs turn observed situations into stories, carrying the author’s point of view alongside the rhythm.
