Michel Legris

Michel Legris’s recorded legacy includes commercial sega and a later effort to document traditional performance with his family. Interviews with the people who recorded and archived him reveal an artist actively concerned with how his music would be preserved. That history gives his songs a context beyond their appearance on modern compilations.

Dalma Dalma

Michel Legris - Topic

Dalma Dalma is credited to Michel Legris in Anthologie du Légendaire. The 2023 date describes the digital anthology edition, not a new performance by the singer.

Mo Capitan

Michel Legris - Topic

Mo Capitan is another Michel Legris recording in Anthologie du Légendaire. Compare it with Dalma Dalma to explore two distinct songs in his recorded repertoire.

A recording project requested by the singer

Archive curator Fanie Précourt recalls that Legris approached the Takamba project because he wanted to record music outside the commercial approach that had begun to frustrate him. The session was organized with the Conservatoire François Mitterrand. This was a practitioner asking for a different kind of record of his work, rather than an archive simply collecting whatever happened to be available.

Précourt places the material within the work of the Phonothèque Historique de l’Océan Indien, where recordings can be documented and returned to the people and families connected with them. Preservation includes those relationships as well as the sound file.

The voice and the family ensemble

Recording engineer Philippe de Magnée dates his session with Legris to 2014 and describes the singer performing with members of his family. His account also records the delay and uncertainty around publication after changes affecting Takamba.

That gap between recording and release is part of the history. A session can exist for years before reaching a wider audience, and a later issue date need not describe a new performance. For Legris, the family participation also makes the recording evidence of transmission and ensemble relationships, not only a document of a single lead singer.
