Early records and a stage partnership

Recalling her beginnings in a 2024 interview, Clency names Samedi soir and Valse créole as her first recorded songs. She describes seeking her mother’s permission and facing a stricter response from her father. Her account connects the start of hotel performances with the emerging tourism sector in the late 1950s.

The partnership with Roger was musical as well as personal. She remembers building a career around their own songs and later describes the encouragement younger artists gave her to continue appearing and collaborating. Her testimony preserves the practical and emotional work behind a long public career.

A career between Mauritius and France

In a later career interview, she dates the couple’s move to France to 1981. They continued travelling between Paris and Mauritius, balancing family life with the ambition to bring sega to more listeners. The story makes diaspora movement part of the music’s working history.

She also recalls the small fees divided among an entire troupe in the late 1950s. Singers, dancers and musicians had to make a livelihood together. Her later wish to support younger artists grows out of that long experience of performance, travel and collective work.
